This Article in Brief
  • Those who resist unnecessary purchase recommendations and temptations, save without sacrifice
  • Even small changes in everyday life can add up a great deal
  • With these tips, you can keep track of your spending and save money at the same time

Old cell phone contracts, expensive electricity providers or high water bills drive up expenses. Here's how to save money in everyday life.

Optimize contracts

  • With many streaming services, several people can share a family subscription - and thus the costs. For example, Netflix can be watched on up to four devices per household, and Spotify can be listened to by up to six people
  • Also, cancel your cell phone and Internet contracts as soon as you sign them. New customers often get better terms, which is why it can be worth switching providers

Detect power guzzlers

  • New electrical appliances are not always better. Although they are usually more powerful, they are often real power guzzlers - a two-year-old computer, for example, is often enough.
  • Avoid standby mode: Five devices connected to a multiple socket strip that can be switched off can save up to 100 euros a year.
  • LEDs work wonders for the bank account. Compared to conventional incandescent lamps, they save around 90 percent energy. At 25,000 hours, they also last longer than other light sources.

Check electricity plan

  • Up until April 2022, the annual average electricity price was 15.5 percent higher than in 2021. Although the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) surcharge has not been applicable since the beginning of July, it is always worth comparing suppliers.

Check the care label

When buying clothes, make sure that pants, dress or blouse can be washed in the machine. This saves high cleaning costs - for example, about 40 euros for pants that are cleaned six times a year.

Save on washing laundry

  • Anyone who wants to save money and the environment in view of the current high energy prices should preferably wash at 30 or 40 degrees in the eco-saving program, skip prewashing and let the laundry air dry. This saves up to 100 euros per year.

Shower more effectively

  • Switch off the water - at least while brushing your teeth or lathering up your hands. It also saves money if you shower for five instead of ten minutes at a pleasant 38 instead of 42 degrees. Savings benefit: almost 100 euros a year. And the trend increases the colder and shorter your shower.
  • With an economically efficient shower head (purchase cost: approx. 30 euros), you also use only half as much water.

Ventilate and heat properly

  • Blast ventilation is more effective and cheaper than permanently setting the window on the tilt. Heat only with the windows closed, vent the radiator regularly, and seal the windows properly. Savings: about 220 euros per year.

Off season vacation

  • Seize the opportunity to hunt for bargains for your next vacation with early booking discounts or last-minute offers. If you are not dependent on the school vacations: especially trips abroad are usually much cheaper outside the main season.

Stay mobile by other means

  • Short distances can be covered perfectly on foot or by bicycle, while longer distances can be covered by bus and train or by carpooling.
  • Those who depend on a car should check whether an e-car is worthwhile. The German Automobile Club (ADAC) has found that many e-cars are cheaper overall than cars with internal combustion engines - when you take into account the purchase price, operating and maintenance costs, and depreciation (source: www.adac.de).

Conscious shopping

  • Products always look particularly tempting in the shop window or on the website. However, avoid unnecessary impulse purchases.
Tip: think over the purchase for one or two days, or even 30 days in the case of larger new purchases such as computers or bicycles. If you still want the product then, it would seem to be genuinely important.

Cook smarter

  • The golden rule for the pocketbook is: never go to the supermarket with an empty stomach, but with a full shopping list.
  • Also, if you plan with fresh ingredients, you'll automatically cook more instead of going out to eat or ordering food. Buy store brands; they're often 10 to 30 percent cheaper and in many cases, are made in the same factory.

Be prepared on the road

  • People tend to spend a lot of money on the road. Whether it's with a sandwich, coffee in your own thermal mug or water in a water bottle, taking food and drinks with you avoids unnecessary costs away from home.
